George Campbell “Concise Compendium of the World's Languages"
Routledge | 1998-05-14 | ISBN: 0415160499 | 684 pages | PDF | 16,1 MB

The The Concise Compendium of the World's Languages provides clear snapshots of over one hundred languages. Drawn from the more comprehensive two volume Compendium of the World's Languages, the articles selected for this volume discuss most languages spoken today by populations of at least five to ten million people, as well as minor languages that figure prominently in the contemporary socio-political context. This combination allows little-known languages, such as Akan, Navajo, Basque and Zulu, to figure prominently alongside the mainstream languages such as Arabic, French, Chinese and Russian. Each entry considers the phonological, morphological and lexical features of the language it discusses. Written for language buffs who want to know-in broad outline-how lots of languages work, this terrific book compiles loads of information in one affordable volume.
George Campbell is a former BBC World Service Linguist and translator.

The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language
Harper Perennial | 2003-01 | ISBN: 9780060520854 | 352 Pages | PDF | 14,4 MB

There are approximately six thousand languages on Earth today, each a descendant of the tongue first spoken by Homo sapiens some 150,000 years ago. While laying out how languages mix and mutate over time, linguistics professor John McWhorter reminds us of the variety within the species that speaks them, and argues that, contrary to popular perception, language is not immutable and hidebound, but a living, dynamic entity that adapts itself to an ever-changing human environment.

Jean Aitchison “Words in the Mind: An Introduction to the Mental Lexicon, 2nd Edition "
Blackwell Pub | 1987-09 | ISBN: 0631144420 | 288 pages | PDF | 19,1 MB

This book deals with words, and how humans learn them, remember them, understand them, and find the ones they want. In brief, it discusses the structure and content of the human word-store or 'mental lexicon', with particular reference to the spoken language of native English speakers. Since the first two editions of "Words in the Mind" were published, work on the lexicon has exploded. This is reflected in this new edition, which contains substantial additions. One new chapter has been added on layering and meaning change, and several others have been considerably expanded. The notes and suggestions for further reading have been updated, and numerous new references have been included. The book remains accessible in style and easy to read for both undergraduates and non-specialists.

E-book: Words and Symbols (2006)

Words and Symbols

Nicola Barden, Tina Williams “Words and Symbols"
Open University Press | 2006-12-01 | ISBN: 0335213618 | 128 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

What lies behind the language we use as counsellors and psychotherapists?
How does language fit into a therapeutic context?
Can we truly say what we mean, and hear what is said, in the consulting room?
This book takes apart, lays out and repositions the most basic of therapeutic tools – the language used to communicate between therapist and client. It begins with a summary of the different schools of thought on language acquisition from infancy onwards. It addresses ways in which philosophical and social contexts may impact on the thoughts and words available for speech. Following this it focuses on the detail of the words spoken in a consulting room, and considers dialogue in the arts therapies, where speech may not be the primary tool for understanding. The book also examines what happens when words fail, how symbols are essential for communication, and whether the emphasis on words in the talking therapies has limited the range of communication in the consulting room. An example of this limitation is offered in an extended discussion of gender and language.
The book addresses counsellors and psychotherapists from all major theoretical orientations, from psychodynamic therapies through to humanistic and existential approaches, maintaining an overview that is relevant to an integrative position.
Written for students of counselling and psychotherapy as well as practitioners who want to develop their skills and awareness, Words and Symbols engages the reader in understanding the essence of therapeutic communication.

Brian Roark, Richard Sproat “Computational Approaches to Morphology and Syntax"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2007-09-27 | ISBN: 0199274770 | 320 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB

The book will appeal to scholars and advanced students of morphology, syntax, computational linguistics and natural language processing (NLP). It provides a critical and practical guide to computational techniques for handling morphological and syntactic phenomena, showing how these techniques have been used and modified in practice.
The authors discuss the nature and uses of syntactic parsers and examine the problems and opportunities of parsing algorithms for finite-state, context-free and various context-sensitive grammars. They relate approaches for describing syntax and morphology to formal mechanisms and algorithms, and present well-motivated approaches for augmenting grammars with weights or probabilities.

E-book: An Encyclopaedia of Language (1990)

An Encyclopaedia of Language

N. E. Collinge “An Encyclopaedia of Language"
Routledge | 1990-01-12 | ISBN: 0415020646 | 1011 pages | PDF | 5,1 MB

In this indispensable reference, twenty-nine leaders in the field describe how language works--accounting for its nature, use, study, and history. An Encyclopaedia of Language provides a truly comprehensive overview of how the various branches of linguistic study have arrived at their current positions. It divides the subject into three logical sections: 1) the "inner nature" of language; 2) its interaction with other disciplines; and 3) some special aspects of its study and use.
Readers will find detailed coverage of: how language works; how language is taught and learned; phonetics; grammar and semantics; how linguists research their subjects and interpret results; second languages; language and computation; writing systems; the history of language study; the evolution of language; the distribution of languages around the world; lexicography; dialectology; and other topics.

Made with Words: Hobbes on Language, Mind, and Politics

Philip Pettit “Made with Words: Hobbes on Language, Mind, and Politics"
Princeton University Press | 2008-01-03 | ISBN: 0691129290 | 192 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

Hobbes's extreme political views have commanded so much attention that they have eclipsed his work on language and mind, and on reasoning, personhood, and group formation. But this work is of immense interest in itself, as Philip Pettit shows in Made with Words, and it critically shapes Hobbes's political philosophy.
Pettit argues that it was Hobbes, not later thinkers like Rousseau, who invented the invention of language thesis--the idea that language is a cultural innovation that transformed the human mind. The invention, in Hobbes's story, is a double-edged sword. It enables human beings to reason, commit themselves as persons, and incorporate in groups. But it also allows them to agonize about the future and about their standing relative to one another; it takes them out of the Eden of animal silence and into a life of inescapable conflict--the state of nature. Still, if language leads into this wasteland, according to Hobbes, it can also lead out. It can enable people to establish a commonwealth where the words of law and morality have a common, enforceable sense, and where people can invoke the sanctions of an absolute sovereign to give their words to one another in credible commitment and contract.
Written by one of today's leading philosophers, Made with Words is both an original reinterpretation and a clear and lively introduction to Hobbes's thought.

Language, People, Numbers: Corpus Linguistics and Society (Language & Computers)
Rodopi | ISSN: 9042023503 | 2008-01-28 | PDF | 336 Pages | 8,6 Mb

The contributions to this volume offer a broad range of novel insights about data-based or data-driven approaches to the study of both structure and function of language, reflecting the increasing shift towards corpus-based methods of analysis in a wide range of areas in linguistics. Corpora can be used as models of human linguistic experience, and the contributors demonstrate that there is ample scope for integrating such models into the descriptions of discourse, grammar, and meaning. Continually improving technological development facilitates the design of larger and more comprehensive corpora documenting language use in a multitude of genres, styles and modes, even starting to include visual aspects. Software to investigate these data also becomes increasingly powerful and more refined. The sixteen original articles in this volume cover substantial ground on both the theoretical as well as applied levels. Having such data and software resources at their disposal, the contributing researchers rethink the long discussed interplay between language system and use from various angles, considering socio-cultural and cognitive involvement and representation, with synchronic as well as diachronic perspectives in view. These theories and quantitative / qualitative methods are applied to a range of topics from language acquisition and teaching to literature and politics. All of the authors in this volume reveal the profound and leading impact that Mike Stubbs' work has continued to contribute to the field of corpus-based description of language structure, use and function.

Elisabeth Ahlsen “Introduction to Neurolinguistics"
John Benjamins Pub Co | 2006-07-19 | ISBN: 9027232334 | 212 pages | PDF | 1,7 MB

This introduction to neurolinguistics is intended for anybody who wants to acquire a grounding in the field. It was written for students of linguistics and communication disorders, but students of psychology, neuroscience and other disciplines will also find it valuable. The introductory section presents the theories, models and frameworks underlying modern neurolinguistics. Then the neurolinguistic aspects of different components of language – phonology, morphology, lexical semantics, and semantics-pragmatics in communication – are discussed. The third section examines reading and writing, bilingualism, the evolution of language, and multimodality. The book also contains three resource chapters, one on techniques for investigating the brain, another on modeling brain functions, and a third that introduces the basic concepts of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. This text provides an up-to-date linguistic perspective, with a special focus on semantics and pragmatics, evolutionary perspectives, neural network modeling and multimodality, areas that have been less central in earlier introductory works.

Oxford University Press, USA | 2006-11-09 | ISBN: 019928413X | 366 pages | PDF | 1,91 MB

This book is the first since 1897 to describe the earliest reconstructable stages of the prehistory of English. It outlines the grammar of Proto-Indo-European, considers the changes by which one dialect of that prehistoric language developed into Proto-Germanic, and provides a detailed account of the grammar of Proto-Germanic. The first volume in Don Ringe's A Linguistic History of English will be of central interest to all scholars and students of comparative Indo-European and Germanic linguistics, the history of English, and historical linguists. The next volume will consider the development of Proto-Germanic into Old English. Subsequent volumes will describe the attested history of English from the Old English period to the present.

Paul Beale “Shorter Slang Dictionary"
Routledge | 1993-12-28 | ISBN: 0415088666 | 241 pages | PDF | 1,08 MB

Long before Orwell mourned the corruption of the English language, his mother tongue was fast becoming a motley one, absorbing new colloquialisms by the minute. The Shorter Slang Dictionary, the latest compilation of English slang from freelance lexicographer Rosalind Fergusson, is proof that even colloquial English has achieved a certain degree of lexicographical legitimacy in the undiscriminating 20th century. Incorporating idioms, linguistic informalities, and indecipherable curse words from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the Shorter Slang Dictionary throws linguistic propriety to the wind in its fervent pursuit of off-color terms. Defining everything from "ash-cash" to "pillock" to the ever-popular "zit," the Shorter Slang Dictionary will be of interest to lexicographers, linguists, and general readers.
